In Northeast Ohio, the push for independent redistricting commissions is more than just a political move—it's a call for genuine representation. Gerrymandering, the practice of manipulating district boundaries to favor one political party over another, has historically skewed the voices of our diverse communities. While some argue that gerrymandering can ensure stability or protect incumbents with experience, it often comes at the cost of sidelining minority communities and undermining public trust. Independent redistricting seeks to combat this by ensuring fair elections that truly reflect our region's varied interests. By prioritizing transparency and fairness, these commissions aim to amplify marginalized voices, diminish the influence of special interests, and rebuild Northeast Ohioans' faith in an electoral system that genuinely works for them.
Let the People Speak
Protect Non-Partisan, Open Primaries
In Ohio, and indeed across the nation, there's a growing need to revitalize our democratic processes to ensure they're truly representative and inclusive. While members on both sides the duopoly may fear it, an open primary system is a significant step in this direction. By allowing all voters, irrespective of their party affiliation, to participate in the primary elections, we ensure a broader spectrum of voices is heard right from the outset. This inclusivity can lead to more representative candidates emerging from the primaries, as they need to appeal to a wider electorate rather than just the extremes of their party. However, an open primary is just the beginning.
The Future of Fair Voting
Beyond First-Past-the-Post
As we strive for a more inclusive and representative democracy, the combination of open primaries with advanced voting methods like ranked-choice voting can be transformative. Open primaries, where voters of any affiliation can participate, lay the foundation for a broader spectrum of voices to be heard. But to truly capture the nuanced preferences of the electorate, we need to look beyond traditional voting methods. Ranked-Choice Voting (RCV): This method allows voters to rank candidates in order of preference. If no candidate achieves a majority from first-choice votes, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated, and their votes are reallocated based on the next preferences. This continues until a candidate secures a majority. STAR (Score Then Automatic Runoff) Voting: Voters score each candidate on a scale (e.g., 0-5). The two candidates with the highest scores proceed to an "automatic runoff," where the candidate preferred by more voters wins. This method captures both the intensity and preference of voter support. This method is Justin's favorite! Condorcet Method: Named after the Marquis de Condorcet, this method identifies the candidate who would win a majority of the vote in all head-to-head elections against each of the other candidates. It's a way to find the most broadly supported candidate, even if they aren't everyone's first choice. Other Methods: There are other ranked methods like Borda Count, where voters rank candidates and points are assigned based on position, or Approval Voting, where voters can vote for as many candidates as they approve of, without ranking them. Advocating for these methods offers several benefits: Diverse Representation: These methods encourage candidates with broad appeal, ensuring elected officials truly represent their constituents. Eliminates Vote Splitting: Voters can support multiple candidates without inadvertently harming their most preferred candidate's chances. Reduces Negative Campaigning: With methods like STAR and Condorcet, candidates are incentivized to appeal to a broader base, reducing the appeal of negative tactics. Reflects Nuanced Preferences: These methods capture the electorate's nuanced preferences more accurately than a simple majority vote. By championing an open primary system followed by advanced voting methods like ranked-choice, STAR, or the Condorcet method, Northeast Ohio can be at the forefront of electoral reform, ensuring a democracy that's truly by the people, for the people.
Enhancing Representation
The Case for More Legislative Seats
Ohio's diverse and dynamic population demands a legislative body that can accurately capture its multifaceted needs and aspirations. As our communities grow and evolve, it's crucial that our representation in the state legislature keeps pace. Currently, each state representative in Ohio speaks for well over 120,000 constituents, leading to certain communities or issues being overshadowed. By expanding the number of legislative seats thoughtfully, based on careful demographic studies, we can ensure each new constituency is equitably represented. Smaller constituencies mean that each representative can be more in tune with the specific needs, challenges, and aspirations of their community. It allows for more town hall meetings, more community engagements, and more opportunities for constituents to have direct interactions with their elected officials. Moreover, with more seats in the legislature, there's a greater chance for diverse voices to be heard. This includes not just ethnic and cultural diversity, but also diversity in professions, backgrounds, and life experiences. Such a rich tapestry of representatives can lead to more comprehensive and inclusive policymaking. Additionally, a larger legislative body can dilute the influence of big money and partisan politics. When campaigns are localized to smaller communities, the emphasis shifts from expensive, broad-stroke advertising campaigns to grassroots, community-driven efforts. This levels the playing field for candidates without significant financial backing, ensures that representatives are more attuned to their community's needs rather than those of big donors, and prevents major parties from controlling the representative. Increasing the number of representatives in the Ohio state legislature presents not only a chance to enhance representation, but also a unique opportunity to invest in and revitalize in our capitol's infrastructure. Columbus would see the need for expanded legislative offices, meeting spaces, and facilities to accommodate the influx of representatives. This infrastructure growth can act as a catalyst for broader urban development, bringing with it new jobs, businesses, and a renewed vibrancy to the city's core. Beyond Columbus, our hometowns and districts would also benefit. As each representative seeks to maintain a closer connection to their smaller constituencies, the demand for local offices, community engagement spaces, and outreach centers would increase. These spaces would become hubs of activity, where constituents can directly interact with their representatives, voice their concerns, and participate in the democratic process more actively. Such infrastructure projects, while necessitating initial investment, promise long-term economic and social returns. They can spur local construction jobs, attract ancillary businesses, and become focal points for community gatherings and civic engagement. In essence, the move to expand the legislature can set in motion a wave of development and community-building, reinforcing the very essence of representation – staying connected and accessible to the people. By expanding the Ohio state legislature, we're not just adding numbers; we're amplifying voices, enriching our democratic processes, and ensuring that every corner of our state has a seat at the decision-making table.

His personal experiences, shaped by a lineage of farmers and ranchers, have given him a deep appreciation for the land and the people who cultivate it. He's witnessed the pride that lights up a farmer's eyes with every successful harvest and has shared the collective sigh when nature doesn't cooperate. In Justin, you're choosing a partner who understands the intricate dance between man and nature and is fiercely committed to ensuring the agricultural heartbeat of District 99 remains robust and vibrant. By collaborating with agricultural experts and local farmers, he aims to develop programs that address soil health, crop rotation, and pest management using environmentally friendly methods. But for Justin, the heart of agriculture lies in its people. He believes in strengthening the ties between farmers and the community. To this end, he's committed to initiatives that expand farmers' direct access to local markets, ensuring they receive fair prices for their produce. By reducing the layers of middlemen and promoting direct sales platforms, he aims to keep the economic benefits within the community. Furthermore, Justin envisions a feedback mechanism where farmers can voice their concerns, ensuring that their insights directly influence agricultural policies in District 99. Above all, Justin's dedication extends beyond policies. He understands the intrinsic link between the health of our land and the well-being of our community. With a balanced approach that respects both tradition and innovation, he's poised to ensure District 99 remains at the forefront of agricultural excellence, where the legacy of the past paves the way for a prosperous future.

Justin envisions a robust transit system integrating sea, road, and rail, fostering local businesses and ensuring swift commutes. He sees the potential of high-speed rail to transform District 99, connecting it to major urban centers as close as Cleveland to New York City and Chicago. The strategic advantage of Ashtabula County as a federal port of entry further amplifies its potential to become a linchpin in promoting international trade, establishing economic partnerships with major cruise lines, and facilitating streamlined customs procedures, significantly bolstering the local economy. As a state representative, Justin will lobby for federal funds, collaborate with urban planners, and engage with local communities to ensure that development is both sustainable and beneficial. Justin is committed to enhancing connectivity and positioning District 99 as a pivotal point in a network that binds the East to the Midwest. Green Gold: Hemp and Cannabis in District 99
Hemp and Cannabis can be a major boost to the economic ecosystem of District 99 - adding second sources of income for our wineries
The green revolution is sweeping across the nation and District 99 stands at a pivotal juncture to harness the immense potential of hemp and cannabis. Justin's firsthand experience as a newspaper editor in Colorado during legalization has provided him with unique insights into the transformative impact of this industry. He witnessed communities flourish, jobs created, local economies bolstered, and patients given new hope through alternative medicinal options, all while ensuring responsible and safe utilization. The cultivation of hemp and cannabis is about strategically leveraging it for the economic and health betterment of District 99. Justin envisions a future where our farmers, supported by state-backed training and resources, diversify their crops and, consequently, their income by integrating hemp and cannabis into their farming practices, providing our farmers with additional means to sustain and grow their operations. The economic ripple effects extend beyond the fields and into our communities. From dispensaries to retailers, fostering a robust hemp and cannabis industry will pave the way for new local businesses to sprout. Justin is committed to ensuring that this industry is accessible to local entrepreneurs, providing them with the resources and support to navigate through regulatory frameworks and establish successful ventures. Beyond economics, the empowerment of individuals to cultivate their own cannabis plants is a step towards self-sufficiency, economic relief, and therapeutic agency. Justin firmly believes that every resident of District 99 should have the right to grow a limited number of cannabis plants for personal use, ensuring that the benefits of this plant are accessible to all, irrespective of economic status. By allowing self-grow, we not only provide individuals with a cost-effective alternative to purchasing cannabis but also give them the opportunity to engage in a therapeutic and rewarding cultivation process. This initiative can further stimulate a grassroots educational movement, where experienced growers share their knowledge with novices and foster community bonds. On the healthcare front, cannabis holds the promise of providing relief to those suffering from chronic pain, anxiety, and various other ailments. Justin is dedicated to ensuring that medical cannabis is not only accessible to all who need it but is also supported by research conducted right here in District 99, propelling our district to the forefront of medical cannabis research. In the realm of industrial hemp, the possibilities are boundless. From textiles to biodegradable plastics, hemp can be the key to unlocking sustainable alternatives to various products. While aligning with our commitment to environmental stewardship without compromising on economic development, District 99 can be a new beacon of manufacturing in Ohio. Justin understands the reservations some might have given the misconceptions surrounding cannabis. But with responsible governance, transparency, and community engagement, he believes District 99 can set a gold standard for how to integrate hemp and cannabis into the local economy, ensuring prosperity and progress for all.
